Handmade Furniture
![]() | Ambrosia Maple TableSpecially selected for this table, the solid Ambrosia Maple top features deep brown mineral streaks surrounded by thin black lines. Nature’s handiwork at its best. With the top the focal point, I designed the base to appear as though the table top were floating in air. Black Walnut legs and apron are hand-shaped with gentle, flowing curves. |
![]() | Cedar Book ChestDesigned to store a prized collection of novels, this wall chest would just as easily house china cups and saucers. Its simple lines and muted colours are accentuated by the hand-made Japanese paper on the shoji style doors. Traditional joinery has been used throughout this subtle piece – slip joints for the door frames, a keyed mitered case, and half-lap joints on the shoji kumikos. I have left the chest unfinished so the western red cedar can age naturally. This chest was featured in an article I wrote for Fine Woodworking in May/June 2007, Issue #191. |
![]() | Cherry Entrance CabinetIn need of some storage space near her front entranceway, a client commissioned me to make this cabinet. Its main function was to organize often used items. The drawers will store keys, wallets and mail while the shelves will keep six pairs of shoes out of sight but easily accessible. The black cherry "leaf and berry" marquetry on the door panels was custom designed to suit the homes’ interior. I carved the door handles from solid walnut. Asian style had a strong influence on this cabinets’ design. |
![]() | Cherry Leaf Coffee TableThe asymmetrical top is constructed of 1 1/4" thick solid black cherry and is designed after a Black Cherry leaf. A silhouette of three black cherry leaves and some black cherry fruit are inlayed into the top. The inlay is made of ebonized pear wood. The base of this table tapers inward, providing a sturdy platform for the oversized leaf top and a line similar to the trunk of a tree. |
![]() | Chest IIThis unique chest will organize small household items: wallets and keys near the entranceway, silverware and napkins in the dining room, jewelry in the bedroom. The legs are simple, curved slightly, tapering as they rise and fall outward near the top. The Chakte-Kok wood, used on the drawer fronts, has a bold reddish/purple colour that deepens with age. It is from a Mexican tree, often overlooked despite its strength, smooth texture and gorgeous colour. The rest of the chest is made of Sugar Maple. Its soft colour and grain complete this piece with simplicity and strength. Han-made drawer pulls and hand-cut dovetails are beautiful and one of a kind. |
![]() | Chrysanthemum Dining TableThis table was inspired by the natural beauty and form of the chrysanthemum flower. I was commissioned to build this larger version of my "Chrysanthemum Coffee Table" for a semi-circular room overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Hammered copper provides an accent to the rich brown colour of the laminated solid wood. It also matches other design elements of the millwork inside the room. The table’s round design encourages conversation and comfort.. |
![]() | Copper Book StandFor showcasing books and sheet music. Made from Black Walnut and Copper, with African Mahogany for the wooden hinge, adjusting pin and miter keys. The elegant curved legs are hand shaped and offer a sturdy platform. They are laminated from solid black walnut - providing strength and rigidity. This stand features an adjustable top, and is built at a set height. It can be made to adjust by height, if desired |
![]() | End TableThe simple design of this solid Black Cherry end table is complimented by the black inlay on the top, the apron and the legs. The front drawer adds storage space. |
![]() | Flagstone Sofa TableThe focal point of this table is the double flagstone top. The rocks’ colour and texture are rarely found in traditional furniture but make a great addition to this sofa table. When I began working on this table, selecting the rocks was the first and most important step - the rest of the table was literally constructed around them. The base has curved lower rails and a black finish. The shelf will be used to display artwork. |
